The winery Castell Miquel is located in a picturesque location in one of the most beautiful areas of Mallorca. The view over the valley is to the east, toward the rising sun. Legend has it that an angel once appeared to a Majorcan peasant. The angel told him to plant a vine at this point. The farmer obeyed, and the vines developed into the best on the island. In gratitude, the farmer placed a Madonna in a nearby cave. To this day, the cave with the Madonna has yet to be rediscovered.
References to the cave (Spanish: "cueva") are found in the original plans of the castle. When the current owner, Professor Michael A. Popp, acquired the estate, he made it his mission to reveal the secret. On the slopes blessed by the angel, he re-cultivated the old areas of the Majorcan farmers and christened the terraces he created the "Stairway". In the event that he discovers the cave, a wine is to be made there. The name is already fixed: "Cueva Madonna".
